According to some research, less than 3% of people (in the US) write down their goals (we can assume that this number is similar in Canada). And research also shows us that writing down our goals, reading them daily, and having a process or structure in place to help meet them, actually works! So do you want to be part of the 3% that reaches their goals and creates an awesome 2021 for themselves, or the 97% that simply lets life happen to them and hope for the best? As Ed Mylett is fond of saying, "life happens FOR us, not to us", so let's embrace life, take control of the things we can, and manifest a future we are proud of.
There are a few reasons why people may not plan out their goals - fear of failure, fear of success, having a victim or defeatist mindset, not understanding the power of goal setting, a belief that they don't have control over their life, or simply not knowing how to start. There are a TON of resources out there about goal setting (books, blogs, articles, courses, etc.) I've shared a few of my favourites at the end of this blog. Based on the reading and research I've done, and also what I've learned works for me, I've put together a document to help kickstart your goal setting. It includes journaling prompts and ideas for setting your goals for the new year. It starts with a year review, because it's important to acknowledge and close out the past year, and then moves into planning the new year.
I encourage you to set aside an hour or two in a quiet space where you can reflect on the past year's accomplishments and challenges and think about where you want to go, and how you want to feel, in 2021. All you need is a journal, a pen and an open mind.
